IACG Organizational Structure

The IACG set up a  structure to carry out its current and potential future space science coordination activities.  Therein working groups deal with all matters concerning coordination among missions within the approved areas of activity of the IACG and panels deal with promising scientific areas that  benefit from interagency coordination .

Working Group 1: Solar System Exploration (Phase 3)

Established at the 16th plenary session of the IACG in the USA, December 9-11, 1996

Purview: the WG shall investigate possible international collaborative efforts that would benefit the various ongoing and future flight projects to the small bodies of the Solar System (comets and Asteroids) cfr. minutes 18th plenary meeting.

Recent and  and future meetings:
WG   Bern, October 6, 1998 (in conjunction with 18th plenary)
Sub/set (NASA, ESA) Turin, June 4, 1999 (during the IMPACT WS)
WG   Padova, October 14, 1999 (during the DPS/AAS)
WG   Okinawa, Nov.16,1999 (in conjunction with the 19th plenary)

Working Group 2: Solar Terrestrial Science (Phase 2)

Constituted at the 16th. Plenary in the USA, December 9-11,1996 from the regrouping into one group of the former WGs: 1(Science), 2 (Data exchange) and 3 (Mission Design and Planning), established at the start of Phase 2 in 1986/87.

Purview: Coordination of the scientific aims, of mission planning and profiles, and of data exchange of the various missions dedicated to Solar Terrestrial Science of the member Agencies. Four scientific campaigns were defined and have, and are, being carried out to address very specific scientific questions which could only be solved by coordinated simultaneous multispacecraft observations in certain periods of time, that also could include periods when suitable observations are made from the ground. Four Workshops were held in the period 1992-94 to define and set up the campaigns and reports were issued.

Recent and future meetings:
Bern, Switzerland, October 6, 1998 (in conjunction with 18th Plenary)
Boston, USA, June 1, 1999 (during AGU)
Okinawa, Japan, November 16,1999 (in conjunction with 19th Plenary)

Accomplishments: Campaign 1 has already resulted in about 20 papers and presentations in 1998 at the 4th International Conference on Substorms, at COSPAR and EGS, at the NATO research workshop (Slovakia), and at the ISTP Workshop at RAL (UK). Results of Campaign 2 were also presented at RAL (1998), and those of Campaign 3 at the ESLAB Symposium in September 1997 and papers have and are appearing in the relevant journals. Campaign 4 was discussed at a workshop at ISSI in 1996 and key results reported in a paper byNeugebauer et al in JGR (1998).

Working Group 3: Data Archiving

Established at the 16th Plenary in the USA, December 9-11, 1996

Terms of reference (approved by IACG at 17th plenary in Moscow, Dec. 1997):

Panel 1: High Energy Astrophysics

Established in 1986/87 as Panel 3 and renamed at the 16th Plenary in Port Canaveral, December 1996.

Purview: to survey and maintain information flow among the member agencies on projects in high energy astrophysics in order to enhance complementarity among the missions and to emphasize common aspects and data requirements.

Recent and future meetings:
Bern, October 6, 1998 (in conjunction with 18th plenary)
